O&M.nyc Team Live Education Session

The iso-education never stops for team Chumba!

Just as we were starting to feel a little bit too isolated from the rest of the world here in Melbourne, we were fortunate enough to attend the online, live show from O&M’s flagship salon in New York, O&M.nyc @originalmineralnyc.

From inside the GORGEOUS New York salon space we got to see Creative Director Janelle Chaplin @heywhatschaplin demo a stunning 60s inspired blowout look.

Colour Specialist Stephanie Clark @stephanieatnyc also demonstrated her amazing hair painting skills and Colourist Paprika (Papi) Velour @bleotch giving us a taste of her specialty, the ‘bleach and tone’.

The look that Janelle created for us was all about volume and creating a ‘floaty’ feel in the hair.

To do this, she utilized some of the amazing O&M products including the Rootalicious Root Lift Mousse, Desert Dry Volumising Dry Texture Spray, Frizzy Logic Finishing Shine Spray and the Original Queenie Firm Hold Hairspray.

Layering all these products combined with a large-barrel tong set created the perfect soft, 60s glamour style.

Throughout her 20 years in the industry, Janelle has worked across the globe in Sydney, London and New York as a sought-after session stylist.

Shooting with some of fashions finest photographers and magazines including Elle US and Paper magazine.

Janelle is currently based in New York and is the owner of O&M.nyc which allows her to lead hair at New York fashion week shows for O&M each season.

Next, Stephanie gave us an engaging demo of her specialty which is hair painting.

Her lovely model had beautiful long hair but, with unsurprisingly, a pretty huge isolation-regrowth.

Steph’s freehand painting placement and technique gave a lived-in and lower maintenance look to her model.

She blended and diffused the hard regrowth line and added a pop of brightness which created a natural ‘dusty gold’ overall colour.

This particular look and technique is something that is no doubt going to become a huge trend coming out of lockdown and moving into spring and summer.

Lastly, Papi showed off some of her amazing creative colour work

this look left me super inspired and dying to get back into the salon!

Papi’s specialty, the ‘bleach and tone’, or as we would call it here in melbourne, an ‘on-scalp bleach with creative toner or bright’s and pastels’.

Honestly, I like Papi’s term better!

Essentially what that is, is an all over bleach lightening with a creative toner afterwards, whether it’s platinum, pink or rainbow.

Papi started her demo with her model already pre-lightened to be the perfect canvas for a creative toner.

Using three different colour formulas, Papi worked her magic, with ingenious techniques and sectioning patterns to create this beautiful peachy, apricot, rose gold colour.

JESSICA RICHES

Meet Jessie the 'Champ'

So we found her at the Cheese Cake Shop... yup we did... all we heard for the first six months was "at the Cheese Cake Shop we..." That was driving Queen Bee nuts because she hates Cheese cake lol! But we all love 'lil-Jess' so we hung in there.

Besides the endless cake stories there was a little something that made this young lady stand out very early on - those hands OMG - those hands can 'do hair'.

'Old' hairdressers know talented digits when they see them and all of the 'mature' brains-trust in the House of Chumba could see the talent just oozing from those little fingers. IF only we could just shut her up about baking cakes we'd all be just fine!

Well the little baker did snap out of desert land and has now stormed onto the Big Hair stage by:

a) ruling the roost on the Chapel St salon floor and organising the Genius Colleen

b) winning the title of the AHFA Australia Best Apprentice Hairdresser 2019 (she's also a Finalist for AHFA 2020... to be announced)

No one's mentioned Cheese Cake since btw - good riddance to that.

We sometimes use the label 'true blood' - this refers to staff that are have trained from a first year apprentice to fully qualified with us all the way. Jessica is a 'true blood - and doesn't it show!

We can't wait to see her develop even further in her career.
