Balayage Haircut Training with Stephanie Bellairs

In 2020 there has been a lot of change.

From the way we interact with each other to the way we do hair. At Chumba we pride ourselves with keeping up to date with the latest trends and techniques through regular education.

Being in lockdown has not changed that.

We have been extremely fortunate to be able to attend some amazing online education sessions with some of the industry’s best. Most recently, we got to learn from Stephanie Bellairs (@stephaniebellairs) who is an award-winning hairdresser, educator and owner of the salon Cabello by Stephanie Bellairs.

What we learnt from Stephanie, was that, like everything changing around us, there is a huge change in the way we are cutting balayaged hair.

In this session Stephanie demonstrated a beautiful haircut on a freshly coloured balayage. She called this look ‘The Girl Next Door Shag Cut’, featuring soft textured, voluminous shaggy layers with a killer curtain fringe on her blonde balayage model.

Moving on from the bold hair colour trend that we’ve being seeing, it is likely that there will be a shift toward softer, lower maintenance and more lived-in colour looks coming into spring and summer.

Things like deeper roots and warmer, sandier toned balayage looks will be the new hair trend.

With this shift will come the transition to softer, more layered and texture focused haircuts. Leaving behind our long time loved blunt cuts and heavy one-lengths.

Below I have gathered some of my favourite celebrity haircut and colour combos that we can expect to see a lot of in 2020:

1. Taylor Swift - Classic bright blonde with her signature textured shag cut with choppy fringe.

2. Jennifer Lopez- Everyone went NUTS over J. Lo’s recent ‘lob’ cut transformation. With it’s piecy texture, accentuating her bright, bold blonde face frame.

3. Ashley Benson- Beautiful, shiny ‘bronde’ balayage with warm tones reinforced with subtle shape and face framing layers to create movement and softness.

4. Kirsten Dunst-Another bright clean blonde with a perfect, sweeping curtain fringe and soft shaggy layers for an effortless style.

5. Julia Roberts-Embracing the warmth for a beautiful caramel balayage. Creating a pop around the face with heavier blonde highlights and face framing layers.

6. Miley Cyrus-Something a bit different and a bit more extreme than your average ‘modern day shag’. Taking textured layering to the next level with this cool-girl mullet featuring a natural lived in blonde balayage.

7. Elizabeth Olsen-Subtle piecy blonde highlights building to a more solid creamy blonde on the ends. Adding the perfect touch of softness and shape around the face with her curtain bangs and shaggy layers.

8. Rachel Bilson-Soft caramel, low maintenance balayage with longer layering and mid-length curtain fringe that shapes the face perfectly.

9. Emily Ratajkowski-High impact beachy blonde balayage almost all the way up to the root given softness and texture from the choppy face frame and shattered layers.

10. Chloe Moretz-Heavy curtain fringe and supper shaggy layers gives that cool-girl edge to her beautiful soft, golden balayage.

JESSICA RICHES

Meet Jessie the 'Champ'

So we found her at the Cheese Cake Shop... yup we did... all we heard for the first six months was "at the Cheese Cake Shop we..." That was driving Queen Bee nuts because she hates Cheese cake lol! But we all love 'lil-Jess' so we hung in there.

Besides the endless cake stories there was a little something that made this young lady stand out very early on - those hands OMG - those hands can 'do hair'.

'Old' hairdressers know talented digits when they see them and all of the 'mature' brains-trust in the House of Chumba could see the talent just oozing from those little fingers. IF only we could just shut her up about baking cakes we'd all be just fine!

Well the little baker did snap out of desert land and has now stormed onto the Big Hair stage by:

a) ruling the roost on the Chapel St salon floor and organising the Genius Colleen

b) winning the title of the AHFA Australia Best Apprentice Hairdresser 2019 (she's also a Finalist for AHFA 2020... to be announced)

No one's mentioned Cheese Cake since btw - good riddance to that.

We sometimes use the label 'true blood' - this refers to staff that are have trained from a first year apprentice to fully qualified with us all the way. Jessica is a 'true blood - and doesn't it show!

We can't wait to see her develop even further in her career.
