Do

  • Use a Professional Hair Care Shampoo and Conditioner. We choose to use the best products available. Therefore we prescribe Kerastase hair-care. All of the Kerastase shampoo and conditioners are suitable for coloured hair. Ask your stylist for your prescription.

  • High a fashion colours tend to fade quickly in our climate. To aid in this prevention we recommend the Kerastase, Chroma Reflect and the Soleil range.

  • Shampoo your hair only on the 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th day. The hair’s natural oils are important for the health of your hair and scalp.

  • Re-book your next appointment when you leave the salon. Forward planning insures the future of your hair Colour and keeps it in optimum condition.

  • Use a leave-in conditioner or leave-in treatment every day to protect your hair from the elements. Kerastase make a range of these products for all hair types.

  • Avoid white bed linen and towels for a night or two. Strong fashion colours and dark colours tend to ‘rub off’ when they’re still fresh. Some high fashion colours such as Fudge also tend to have less stability as they are designed to wash out.

  • Drink lots of water if you’ve had an on scalp Colour treatment. And lots of water daily. Hydration is the easiest, cheapest hair and skin fix going.
  • Blondes with fine hair or others with hair that tangles easily may benefit from using a satin pillow cover. Cotton covers are abrasive to hair and skin.

  • Eat a well thought out and healthy diet. Overall health and well being is reflected in your hair health (and everywhere else).

  • Use a Treatment at least once a week. We recommend any of the Kerastase masques or why not treat yourself to an indulgence ritual here in the salon.

  • Use a swimming cap if you are a swimmer and/or plait your hair and run
Through a product such as Gelee Aqua-Proof, the conditioner will fill the cuticle and minimize the chlorine penetration. Wash your hair immediately afterwards with a good quality shampoo and conditioner. Kerastase also have a specific range dedicated to those who swim and are exposed to these elements.

  • Seek Medical advice from your doctor concerning pregnancy and colour, chemotherapy and colour or any other major illness and colour.

  • Seek medical advice from your doctor concerning pregnancy and colour, chemotherapy and colour or any other major illness and colour.

  • Book a 4 week appointment to maintain grey re-growth.
  • Book 6 week appointments to maintain foils, panels, permanent or demi, creative colour and toning.

  • Book a haircut every 5 weeks to maintain a style.

  • Alert stylist within 7 days of an unhappy result.

  • Bring pictures, books; DVD’s of certain styles you desire, pictures speak a thousand words.

  • Don’t

    • Use heat appliances on your hair for 48 hours if at all possible.

    • Use strong soap based shampoos. These can wash your Colour investment straight down the sink.

    • Use ‘home lighteners’. These can make a very big expensive mess of your hair. Often Colour corrections are 2-3 times more expensive than just doing the job right first time.

    • Think hair Colour is like painting. Once colored the hair is chemically altered. It’s not always possible to change hair colours quickly or cheaply.

    • Use rubber bands on your hair. These can quickly give you lots of breakage.

    • Smoke! Especially if you are light blonde. Nicotine yellow hair suits nobody.

    • Go Black! Black is almost impossible to remove. Don’t try this at home.

Special occassion Hair & Make Up information

Special Occasion Hair

So it’s a special occasion! Chumba can make you the bell of the ball. Listed below are a few tips to follow when you’re having special occasion hair services.

Price

The Special Occasion hair price is from $50 with a Stylist, $55 with a Senior Stylist, and $65 with a Director. This is strictly a 45 min appointment. The price doses not include shampooing or blow waving. Any hair washing and/or blow-waving is an additional charge, as it is extra time required.
Generally we do not wash hair prior to Special Occasion Styling. Instead we prefer that you shampoo your own hair 24-48 hours prior to the service for best results. This leaves your hair clean but not too slippery.

Consultation

A consultation is highly recommended instead of a trial. A consultation is a complimentary appointment that consists of a 15 min ‘quick chat’ (and maybe a rough play if time permits). Bring along any pictures, ideas, hairpieces, clips, tiaras etc. There is no charge for this appointment but it is strictly 15 minutes. The benefits of this are that your hairdresser gets to know you and what your hair will/will not do. You can discuss your style wants and desires. We can also recommend a haircut and colour to suit your hair on the day if needed.

Trial

At Chumba we rarely do trials except in the case of brides. If you feel you must try on your style beforehand, the full price of $50, $55, or $65 applies. We recommend that you research different style options in magazines or off the Internet. Bring along any hairpieces, clips, tiaras, ribbons etc to the trial. If you require extra time you will be charged accordingly.
* We strongly recommend that for Debs or School Formals a consultation is sufficient. This keeps your costs down to a minimum.

Make-up

We have three qualified make-up artist’s Tania, Rhiannon and Holly. Professional Make-up will cost $45 and take 45 minutes. (Please arrive on the day with no make up on.)

On the BIG Day.

  • Wear a button-up top to avoid wrecking your style.

  • Remember your style will last longer if it is not washed on the day.

  • Your hair must be clean with minimal product in it.

  • Your hair must be completely dry. (No wet hair in ponytails)

  • Check with your stylist what time you are due out of the salon.

  • Bring along any hair accessories that you’ll be wearing.

  • Arrive on time.

Dreadlocks information

Dreadlocks Fact Sheet

(Download a Dreadlocks Fact Sheet)

Things you should know about getting dreadlocks…
Before you break out the wax, we just want you to know this information so you don’t do something you may regret. The last thing that we would want is upset hippies doing some bad karma thing.

Development.

Dreadlocks are not an instant hairstyle like getting a new haircut. If you let them come together on their own, they will look frizzy and out of whack for about 6 months.
Fortunately, your dreadlocks will look great right after you do them.
They will look like dreads but they won’t actually be dreads until they mature and tighten. They will just be knotty hair.
These newbie dreadlocks will be pretty delicate and need to be palm rolled to keep them tight.

Washing.

You can wash your dreads just as you would wash a sponge. By working the Dreadlock shampoo in and then squeezing and rinsing repeatedly to get all of the suds out.
Clean hair will actually lock up faster than dirty hair.

Twist, twist, twist.

Until your dreadlocks mature you will need to play with them a lot. You could just dread them, wax’em and let them do their own thing, but the more you twist and tang the roots and ends, the faster they will grow into healthy, knotty dreadlocks.

Art Directors, Seniors & Stylists?

Chumba operates a tiered pricing structure.

What's that?
This is a pricing system that takes into account the Hairdressers experience, qualifications, achievements, awards, client list and dependent team members.

We have Art Directors (Carl & Belinda), Senior Stylists (Rachel, Rhiannon & Hollie), Stylists (Kim Tania & Nicola) and Junior Stylists (Melyssa & Vaughan).

So an Art Director has lots of experience, education, awards and clientele. Plus they have assistants to help them. Hence an Art Director is expensive.
The pricing works it's way down from there all of the way down to a junior assistant.

Do you need an Art Director?
Yes - if you've got really difficult hair or a special colour, cut or style in mind.
Maybe - if you're a little nervous about having your hair done.
No - if you want it now (they're heavily booked). Or if the task doesn't merit it (for example a tint retouch can be done by a Junior Stylist much cheaper)

All of Chumba's Hairdresser's are
Award Winning Stylists so you're quite safe to choose on personal fit for you.
If in doubt call and ask our staff who would be best suited to you.

Is Chumba Expensive?

Not really if you think about it for a moment...

On first glance we are a lot more expensive per service than other salons in our area.
You could go crazy at Chumba & order up this, that and the next thing. however that's not how we work.
Your Chumba Stylist will discuss with you your desired look and map out exactly what will be needed to achieve that.
Most times, because Chumba's hairdressers are very clever, we can achieve the look the that you want with the minimum of services. So we won't blow your budget.
Plus our work generally last longer. So we'll not need to see you as often as you may be used to.

When you think about, Chumba works out cheaper over the year. And, you'll have a look that you'll LOVE.

How do I find the salon?

Check out the Homepage for our address and contact details.

You can also use this map to find the
Warragul Salon
Or this map to find the
Hair Salon in Drouin

How big is the Salon?

Warragul's BIG. And Drouin is much bigger than you'd expect.
The
Warraul salon is spread over the top floor of a Victorian era Bank building.
There's two levels. It's comprised of 9 separate 'zones'. These are made up of styling rooms (two of), shampoo rooms (two of), reception, retail zone, a colour lab and a hair color studio.

The
Drouin Salon isn't that much smaller.
The new salon has 7 styling units, 3 basins and 6 colour chairs. Plus a gorgeous retailing area.
Drouin Chumba has excellent unlimited parking facilities right outside the front door. It also has excellent accessibility throughout should you need that extra facility.

Where did the name Chumba come from?

Chumba is a made up word using the first initial 'C' to substitute for the first letter of 'Shumba'
Hence 'Chumba'.
Who's C.Shumba? Charity Shumba is our
World Vision Child. She's approximately 7 years old and lives with her mother in Zimbabwe.
Why?
We choose the name because hairdressing can be such a narcissistic industry. After all it's all about the 'Look'. The name reminds us how fortunate we are to be here.

Chumba encourages you yo donate to a worthy charity.

What products do you use?

Chumba is commited to providing only the best in today's Hair Care to our clients.
As the old adage says... 'you get what you pay for.'

Is Chumba any good?

Thats hard to answer in a humble manner.
So we can answer this question in the following way...

"At Chumba we strive to deliver to our clients the very best in all things hairdressing - Craft + Service. We believe in continued self improvement & commit ourselves to the process of fulfilling our individual potentials through diligent hard work. After all hairdressing is a craft that takes years to master. However, great service only takes a moment of thought."

Is Chumba any good?
Try us and see -you'll be amazed at what we can offer you.

Do you offer 'Natural' products?

Yes.
We do carry a range of 'natural' colours. Chumba believes in creating choices for their clients.
These are distributed by
ECO Hair Products in Melbourne. And are made by Farouk Systems in America.

Here's a snippet from their website...
"Have you noticed the overwhelming chemical smell that emulates from a Hairdressing Salon when you first enter it? That smell is due to the ammonia used in perming, colours, bleaches and hair straighteners. We are the first company to bring Australia products which are free of fumes & toxins, environmentally safe and not tested on animals. Our products produce outstanding results whilst keeping your hair in optimum condition, have a pleasant aroma, and are safe enough to rinse down the drain into our waterways."
We recommend ECO products to anyone who may have concerns about traditional permanent colour technology.
However, we doremind our clients that the traditional colour technologies are incredibly well advanced science & have been proven over many
decades of use.
